Institutions & Non-profit

We make brands and communication for associations, foundations and social organisations that need trust, spark involvement, and make a good cause audible. Together we find the story between organisation, brief and the people you want to reach, and we give it a form that holds.

Challenges

A good cause is not yet good communication, and that's where it gets tight for many organisations. They compete for attention, have to show their effect to funders, and recruit specialists who are paid better elsewhere. Three tasks, one budget that usually covers none of them.

A good cause. Barely heard.

Every organisation fights for attention. Illness, death, care at the end of life are topics nobody looks for freely. We give your cause a form that stays in the mind, without getting loud.

Urgent need for people. Little pull.

Social organisations feel the shortage of skilled people every day, and a pale appearance doesn't make it easier to find the right ones. We make an identity that builds identification inside, and shows outside why it's worth working with you.

High demand. Thin trust.

If you want to have a civic effect, you're measured on credibility, not on how often you speak. A stance can't be claimed. It has to be visible. We make the values of the brand visible, so trust can form where it counts.

One brand. Many stakeholders.

Volunteers, clients, funders, staff. An organisation rarely speaks to only one group. We develop an identity that reaches different groups without watering down its core.

Our process

What's the context? At the start of every process is the engagement with you, your vision and your world. With that vision in sight we set our focus and begin to find answers, based on an idea, to the challenges of your project. As individual as you are.

How we work together

Communication is only good if it's understood. That also holds for the tools of how we work together. As a client you get access to your own dashboard. Chat, mail, calendar, files, links. All of it in one place, so we're always one click away.

Common questions

What makes brand work for non-profits different than for companies?

Organisations we work with ask exactly this, often because they feel the rules of the company world don't apply. That's true. A company brand follows revenue. A non-profit brand follows the brief. It sounds small. It changes everything, from the metric to the tone. Where a company wants to sell, an organisation has to build trust, secure legitimacy, and often speak to several groups at once. Funders, volunteers, the people affected, the public. Success doesn't show in a shopping cart. It shows in credibility and involvement. The question we ask at the start: what do you stand for, even when nobody is watching? If the answer is clear, the brand has a foundation. Everything else gets easier.

Is an investment in the brand worth it when money for the actual work is tight?

We understand that brand work can feel like a luxury when the budget is tight and measures have to be financed through donations, third-party funds or funders. Often, though, a weak brand costs every day: in trust given away, in reach that never appears, in funding that lands somewhere else. Brand work then is not a nice-to-have, but a necessity. A clear appearance makes sure the scarce communication capacity you have actually arrives, instead of dissolving in ten different logos and tones. Lack of means is a real challenge for non-profits, charitable organisations and social initiatives. And it is precisely these brands that have a positive influence on our future. That is why it matters to us to support exactly this work. Speak to us, tell us about your vision, and in a free first conversation we will find a frame that fits you.

How does an organisation speak to many audiences without becoming arbitrary?

A brand that has to reach everyone from the funder to the committed volunteer is not alone with this. We meet it from the brewery to the museum. Don't try to compromise in every communication effort. Who tries to please everyone ends up sounding like no one. The answer sits in a strong middle and flexible design: a core of stance and values that stays constant, and imagery and tone that may adapt to the occasion and the public. We develop systems that let you and your brand speak differently to possible volunteers than to the funding board, and still stay recognisably the same organisation.

How do you talk about hard or sensitive topics without scaring people off?

With heavy or sensitive topics, people often sit in very different phases of dealing with them. Illness, death or social injustice can't be prettied up, and shouldn't be. Meeting your audience on the same level, in the right tone, is decisive. You are the expert in your field. Together we make, through brand and communication, a space where a heavy topic can even be spoken about. That's why we need to understand your brand and its context.

Where does a collaboration with fjnland begin?

You are the expert of your brand, the topics you communicate, and the context you move in. So we listen first. We don't put a finished concept over you. We're partners who make visible what you are. At the start stands the engagement with your brief, your surroundings, and the people you want to reach. Only then do we talk about form. If you're not sure where you stand: the first conversation is no strings, and free. Write to us. We're glad to meet you and your project.
