Cities & Politics
Challenges
A municipal project rarely fails at the idea. It fails because nobody understands what it's about. A city, a district, a party. Each of these brands already carries expectations, before the first word is said. A new project has to hold its own in that, without disappearing.
Too many senders. No orientation.
Municipal projects quickly grow into a mesh of names, logos and sub-initiatives. Logical inside, a puzzle outside. We build brand systems that let the independent stay independent, and still hold together.
High expectations. Little room.
A project of a city or a party sits under observation. Every message is measured against what the sender has stood for so far. We make sure a new project fits the existing brand, instead of contradicting it.
Good ideas. Barely any involvement.
Involvement runs empty if the invitation reaches no one. Citizen decision or funding offer: we translate a project into messages that lower hurdles instead of building them, and give people a reason to join in.
Time-limited funding. Lasting effect.
Funded projects have an expiry date. Their effect shouldn't. That's where we start. We give a project a narrative and a brand system that doesn't depend on funding, but on its own capacity to hold.
Our process
What's the context? At the start of every process is the engagement with you, your vision and your world. With that vision in sight we set our focus and begin to find answers, based on an idea, to the challenges of your project. As individual as you are.
Capabilities
fjnland is a home for thoughtful communication. Our aim is to make brands more believable, and more real to experience, from the big picture down to the smallest detail. Together with our clients we work for a better tomorrow, so something lasting remains.
Brand Strategy
Consistency comes from clarity. Together we work out the ground a brand can stand on. With a clear hold on values, vision and position, decisions get easier, communication hits, and the brand is recognisable as itself. Strategy isn't the point. It's the foundation.
Brand Design
Strategy needs a face that speaks the character. Design isn't decoration. It's values, made visible. Type, colour, space, rhythm. An identity that tells the character, and can be trusted.
Brand Communication
What a brand says, on which channel, in which form, decides how it's seen. We don't split communication into leftover touchpoints. We build one world, across campaigns, publications and social.
Brand Experiences
How something looks builds trust, and gives the story a visible voice. A shop or an app is never decoration. It's often the first time someone meets the brand. We design those meetings so they fit.
How we work together
Communication is only good if it's understood. That also holds for the tools of how we work together. As a client you get access to your own dashboard. Chat, mail, calendar, files, links. All of it in one place, so we're always one click away.

Common questions
Do you do the corporate design of our city?
Reworking the corporate design of a city or municipality is an interesting and demanding task. That's why we would answer this with a clear yes. Before a rebrand of a city brand can even be thought, all stakeholders need to be on board, and the why of the rework needs to be clearly communicated. An anniversary can be a reason. A single occasion is usually not enough. We look more closely at what has actually changed, and how citizens see their home, and think the city brand from there, instead of putting a new logo on top. On the funded project Smarte Region Würzburg we widened the view, and thought the umbrella brand that came out of it for the whole region. Today it's still closely tied to the project. It's built so it can grow beyond it, and carry the region further.
Our Smart City project is running, but almost no one knows it. What now?
Don't worry. This isn't a one-off, or a sign that something went wrong. Many transformation projects are technically far along, content and strategy well developed. That only moves the problem. Brand and communication stay behind, because the usually small team has its hands full with the actual delivery. The result: the strategic measures run, and nobody knows what they're for. Sound familiar? We start at the why. What does the person on the ground get from this, and why should they care? From that we build a language and a face that pull the project out of administrative jargon and make it visible. Technology rarely does that on its own.
How do you communicate a political cause without dividing people?
The worry is fair, especially when a topic is already heated. Where communication only sharpens, camps form quickly. Where it explains and invites, involvement forms. The difference rarely sits in the topic itself. It sits in the tone. A project lives from people understanding what's at stake, and what it means for them. We therefore put the concrete use on the ground before the loud argument. Clarity carries further than volume.
What happens to the brand when the funded project ends?
We usually hear this at the start of a project, and that's exactly right. It belongs at the beginning, not at the end. Many funded projects carry a brand that disappears with the last euro of funding, if it isn't thought differently from the start. We therefore build a system that can be uncoupled: independent product brands that exist without the umbrella, and an umbrella brand that stays when the project goes. Time-limited money becomes lasting substance.
We are a small municipality with no marketing team of our own. Is it still possible?
A worry that's easy to follow, and that's exactly when brand work pays off most. Who has little capacity can least afford wild growth, because every special solution later costs more than it saves. We build systems you can maintain yourselves. Clear templates, documented rules, a brand handbook that works in daily life. Not an appearance that needs a large team. One that gets by with a small one.
Do you also work for political parties?
Yes, if the stance fits. We make campaigns for political projects where we see a point, from a municipal initiative to a council alliance. What we don't do: sell messages against our conviction. That also decides who we work for, and who we don't.
