Does anyone from the outside still understand who we are today?

Guide /

Anyone who meets a company for the first time rarely sees just one side. Website, presentation, social media, and job posting together form a picture. It always stays incomplete. But it shapes what people expect from the brand before they get to know it more closely (or want to).

Brand work therefore means arranging these puzzle pieces so that together they form a coherent picture. Over time, though, cracks appear. The offering shifts. Other people take responsibility. The audience changes. None of the touchpoints has to be wrong. But together they suddenly tell an outdated version of what the company is today. This is not a drama about an old logo. It is the quiet question: Do people on the outside still understand who you are today?

With this article we do not want to issue a diagnosis. Every company story is unique. Rather, we want to describe a pattern we see again and again, and which, if you have followed the headline this far, very likely touches your brand too.

So let us work through together which reality must become visible first, where the wrong image forms, what stays and what goes, and only then let form follow. Form follows Narration.

When the presence lags behind

An outdated presence rarely feels like an emergency. "In conversation I just straighten the picture. Our clients know us." That may be true. And it still falls short. Because it is not about look. It is about whether people on the outside still understand what your company stands for, and whether they feel addressed. In a time when brands fight for attention, the wrong first impression often leads to no conversation at all. Or the conversation starts by dismantling a prejudice before there is even room for the actual matter.

The lack of clarity does not necessarily stay outside. It also costs inside. If every campaign, every asset, and every post keeps raising the question, "What does this actually say about us?", the team also has to renegotiate again and again which puzzle piece should reflect reality.

If the public presence tells an outdated version, the audience may first have to find out what you stand for and whether you are even relevant to them. The first contact does not happen. Or it starts with a correction. The question is therefore: Does the presence show the self-understanding that counts for your audience today?

How you recognise the pattern

Not every one of the following signals has to apply to you. What matters is whether something repeats, or whether while reading you get the feeling that you know what follows in some form:

  • The first "real" conversation often corrects an expectation. Prospects arrive with an image that fits an earlier phase. Before it is about their need, you explain what the company stands for today.

  • Key developments sit as an afterthought. New offering, different audience, changed role: present, but in the public image more of an appendix than part of what you are today.

  • Every puzzle piece tells something else. Website, documents, social media, job posting: fine on their own, but together unclear which company is actually standing in front of you.

  • The new always needs an explanation. People who know you can quickly say what makes you. Without that addition, only part stays visible to outsiders. And every new asset feels like a compromise because the tools are not enough to express what is meant.

What comes first and what deliberately does not

If you recognise the pattern, you do not need another checklist. You need a sequence. The obvious reaction is often: new logo, new website, six weeks, problem solved. That can be right later. But it does not yet answer which reality must become visible. And it easily leads to activism that prettifies the first impression without really improving it. Three shortcuts we deliberately do not take:

  • New look with the same lack of clarity. A fresh presence that picks up trends and still leaves open what sets the company apart today can even make things worse. Visibility amplifies what is there. If the signal is weak, you amplify lack of clarity.

  • Retelling everything at once. Not every change has to move to the centre immediately. The task first is to name the one reality outsiders must understand before they speak with you.

  • Confusing implementation with the question. A new visual system, a new website, new templates can be sensible answers. They are not yet an answer to what needs to become more visible in the first place.

How we would approach such a pattern:

  1. Which reality counts today. One. Not the list of all changes of recent years. The one thing an unfamiliar person must understand before a conversation makes sense. Without that decision, every later draft stays a matter of taste.

  2. Where the wrong image forms. The public place where a wrong expectation forms today. Not "the presence is old", but: website home, proposal document, social media, job posting. Where exactly does the image emerge that you correct in conversation?

  3. What stays, what goes. The harder decision is rarely what should look new. It is what truly holds the identity and what makes it unnecessarily heavy. Whoever skips this designs on symptoms.

  4. Only then form. Presence, system, and applications in the places that make this reality visible. Design as translation, not as a starting gun.

First the story that should count. Then the form that brings it outside. Not the other way around.

What that means in practice

In the collaboration with Distelhäuser Brewery, it was not about swapping a grown brand for something new. The brewery has been family-owned since 1876, across seven generations. Its presence had grown over many years: several greens, gradients in the brand roof, a detailed coat of arms. Conversations with the brewery reflected back that the outward presence felt colder and more industrial than the atmosphere they actually work in.

The question was narrower and more honest: Which elements truly hold the identity, and which make it unnecessarily hard to show the brewery as it understands itself? Away from the image of an industrial brewery, toward the self-understanding of a family brewery. Not reinventing, but reordering in the most important places: simplify the coat of arms, condense the colour world, frame the existing identity so it becomes usable again in daily life.

This is not a blueprint for your company. And no proof that every grown company needs a new system. It only shows where the right work begins: not with the question of how new something should look, but with which reality must become visible and what of it form is allowed to hold.

The same pattern holds across industries. If the presence lags behind what the company is today, the fastest relaunch rarely helps. What helps is the sequence: reality, place of friction, what holds versus ballast, then form. Brand strategy and brand design then become translations of the same decision, not two trades guessing one after the other.

When the pattern becomes a task

If a concrete place came to mind while reading, a touchpoint or a conversation that always starts with a correction, that is enough for the next step. Not as a list of all weaknesses. As a feeling that something visible is lagging behind reality.

You do not have to solve this alone. If you want to check whether this sequence holds for you, reach us at hej@fjnland.de. No briefing workshop and no diagnosis of your website. A conversation about which reality must be understandable from the outside and what can come next.
